Widening the Talent Pool - Recruitment Award

Pearson

The Pearson ‘Diversity Summer Internship Programme’ (PDSIP) is the UK’s first publishing internship programme which actively sets out to tackle the barriers faced by candidates from visible ethnic minority backgrounds who wish to enter publishing and media industries, including financial disadvantage, a lack of networks, cultural experience of the industry and mentors.

Launched by Pearson in 2004, PDSIP has provided talented graduates from visible ethnic minority backgrounds the opportunity to gain experience, build networks and develop their skills within a variety of areas including Marketing, Editorial, Production and Sales.

PDSIP addresses the financial challenges BAME candidates may encounter in trying to gain sustained experience in this highly competitive industry by providing:

• A training allowance of £1,100 a month to facilitate their participation.

• Mentorship throughout the training programme, which lasts for eight weeks for business candidates and twelve weeks for journalism.

• Learning and development opportunities including full day programmes focused on their personal and professional career development.

• Encouraging and facilitating the candidates in building networks and professional relationships.

• An innovative programme which continues to set a benchmark for good practice within the media and publishing industry

Impact

  • 80% of interns have been retained in permanent or temporary roles across the company, helping to increase diversity across the organisation and providing opportunities for a talented group of graduates.
  • Interns on the summer internship programme have gained strong professional and personal development on the programme.
  • The programme has been ranked amongst the best internships in the industry by The Guardian newspaper and The Bookseller Magazine (The publishing industry paper).
  • It has been nominated for the ‘Best Diversity Work Experience’ award by student-led ranking website, Rate My Placement.
