Case Study: Flexible Working - Buckles Solicitors LLP
Buckles’ policy is to have an open door policy to requests from staff for changes in working hours and patterns and to enable staff to balance their work and life commitments effectively and efficiently. While business needs are taken into account the firm almost always finds a way to accommodate the request.
The majority of requests come from maternity returners wanting to work reduced hours or days or a combination of both. Buckles has enabled staff to work on PCs at home linked to the office server.
A leading role model has been the Business Development Director who wanted to have more time with her children. Following discussions, and after reviewing the business needs, a new position of Business Development Executive was created. This enabled the Director to work a four day week and a slightly extended term time only.
In the last 12 months 3 Buckles staff have returned to work from maternity leave and requested changes to their working patterns. This is a higher return rate than previously. One male member of staff has gone part-time.
The firm’s policy has also received local newspaper coverage and, as a result, has received enquiries from people interested in joining the company, specifically because of its approach to flexible working.
