Case Study: Occupational Segregation - PriceWaterhouseCoopers
Professional services have traditionally been a male domain at senior levels. In 2005 40% of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ graduate recruits were female, but the company wants to increase this proportion further. The Student Recruitment Team arranged a number of events specifically for women to give an insight into working at the firm and to encourage more applications from women:
- PwC – Is it for me? Opportunities for women in professional services, held in four PwC regional offices at the end of 2005 and beginning of 2006
- Chances – Big 4 event for female undergraduates providing an insight into Professional Services, held in conjunction with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales
- PwC Insight – a two day residential with all-female PwC presenters aimed at female undergraduates held in February 2006.
PwC also has an active Schools Recruitment Team who recruit 150 school leavers each year, either to train as accounting technicians or on GAP year programmes. The team also builds relationships with schools and run presentations to inform students about opportunities with the firm, as well as running skills sessions on work-related topics, such as teamwork, to help students develop the skills that they will need in the workplace. The initiatives help students to think about different career opportunities. The team have held a number of female-only events including:
- Girls in the City – events for schoolgirls held in four locations across the UK
Take our Daughters to Work Day – in conjunction with a number of schools within London with which the company has links through its community affairs work
400 women registered for numerous events in the 2007 season.
New initiatives are being planned and the company hopes to implement them from 1 October 2007.
