Women winning on appeal
Source: People Management
Women in the St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals have successfully won an appeal for equal pay.
The original case, supported by the union Unison, to St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust to a tribunal for paying women a lower wage at weekends than men.
Working as healthcare assistants, domestic supervisors and receptionists were paid time - and- one- third for working Saturday and time - and - two-thirds for working Sunday. However men doing comparable roles received a higher rate of pay.
A London appeal tribunal has found that women working at St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust should be entitled to the same level of unsocial hours pay as men.
The decision means women at the trust and at other hospitals could challenge pay discrimination on the same grounds.
