Employment tribunals on the rise

Law firm Dickinson Dees have reported from research that employment tribunals over the next 3 years are predicted to rise by 370.000.   The cost to UK employers could be in the region of £2.6bn from defending themselves and payments for awards.

An average cost for a tribunal  is £7,000.00 and the expected increase from the last three years to the coming  years is 46%.

New legislation driving this increase that came into effect on the 6th April 2010.

  • Additional paternity leave
  • Employee Study and Training - increases the rights of employees to request time off for study and/or training.
  • Introduction of the fit note.

Further significant changes expected by 2012 include:

  • Equality Act ( expected October 2010 )
  • Shared parental leave ( expect April 2011 )
  • Potential E U Directive extending works councils.
